Foregrounding in Translation: A Stylistic Analysis of Manto's Story Translated in English by Hamid Jalal

The current study aims at finding the use of foregrounding in the translation of Manto’s short story translated into English by Hamid Jalal. The objectives of the research were to find instances of foregrounding based on phonology, grammar, and semantics. Besides that, it also aimed to find the translation strategies applied by the translator to achieve his purpose of foregrounding. The story was about a pimp and the strange behavior of one of the girls he touted. That behavior stirred in the mind of that pimp a particular kind of ideology about the girl, which ended in the reservation of the girl for her tout. Manto is famous for disclosing the veil on human behavior; that is why he is known for breaking the taboos of society. Most of his subjects and topics are considered taboo but he not only wrote about them but also presented a true picture of society. This is one such incident represented in the story selected for the research. The English translation of the story is also applying the same techniques for deviating from the norm to foreground the same concepts as given by Manto in his story. The translator has used modulation, addition, omission, and compensation techniques for his translation. All his translation strategies like literal and oblique were aimed at achieving the same theme as propagated by Manto.
