Intertextuality in the Pro-Left and Pro-Islamist Magazines in Pakistan: A Critical Discourse Analysis
Keywords:
Intertextuality, discourse as discursive practice, critical discourse analysis, ideological conflict, Al-Fatah, ChattaanAbstract
This article is an investigation into the discursive practice of intertextuality in the texts of pro-left magazine Al-Fatah and pro-Islamist magazine Chattan during the Cold War. It applies the second aspect of Fairclough’s triangular model of socio-discourse analysis (SDA), i.e., discourse as discursive practice, and the notion of ideological square from socio-cognitive analysis (SCA) of Van Dijk to explore the discursive practices found in the data obtained from chosen magazines. It focuses on the linguistic category of intertextuality to examine the production and consumption of discourse (text). It also delves into the hidden agendas found in the reporting of chosen periodicals. On the point of producing text, the journalists consider various elements, e.g., editorial policy and choices of the news organization, the targeted addressees, and finally, but importantly, the ideological leanings of the news organization. These magazines quoted different sources including political leaders, journalists, religious scholars, and others to challenge their rival ideas in discourse. They quoted from both the we-group and them-group. They used we group voices to show it positively as well as them-group negatively; on the contrary, they used them-group voices to portray them negatively.
